When interviewing freelance workers, you need to decide if they have the qualities you need to help you accomplish your goals.
Here are five questions to ask when hiring a freelance worker to ensure you find the right person for the job.
1. How long have you been freelancing?
This question isn’t to encourage you to discount new freelancers because they can be equally, if not more equipped to complete the job and manage their own work. However, it’s still a good idea to find out how much experience they have as a freelancer. The more experienced they are, the more likely they are to have their own process for getting the job done.
2. Why do you freelance?
Being a freelancer requires a hustler mentality and a love for what you do. You want to find freelancers that work because they want to be a part of projects that they are passionate about. Avoid working with someone who is freelancing because they donÕt like to work with people. This might be a sign that they are difficult to work with.
3. What kinds of projects have you worked on previously?
While you have probably already reviewed their portfolio, it is still vital for you to have them walk through their work history. Pay attention to how they are describing their past projects. This will give you a good sense of whether or not they are passionate about what they are doing.
4. What would you do if you missed a deadline?
This question is used to determine how effective they are at communicating. A good freelancer will overcommunicate around deadlines. Things happen, and sometimes they will miss a deadline. A good freelancer will be upfront and honest about their timeline. These are the freelancers that you want to hire.
5. What else are you passionate about outside of work?
Knowing a freelancer’s interest outside of work can help you determine if you will enjoy working with them. Because freelancers aren’t full-time employees, you don’t have to gauge how they will fit in a team environment, but it’s always nice to get to know who you are working with. Spending the time to interview potential freelance candidates will provide you with a clear sense of how they manage their time and workload, and how they communicate and it will provide you with the information you need to make a final decision.
